Opposition from most candidates to SH1 Mega Highway (media release)

Save the Basin today welcomed findings from its Wellington Bays and Wellington North election candidate survey on the proposed mega highway through Wellington.

“It is great to see Labour (Ayesha Verrall, Craig Renney), Greens (Julie Anne Genter and Tamatha Paul), Opportunity (Jessica Hammond and Kayla Kingdon-Bebb) and Alliance (Josh Harford) candidates strongly opposing or opposing this project,” said Mr Ross Teppett, spokesperson for Save the Basin.

“For the public concerned about this mega project going through the city, Save the Basin hopes that this information is useful for voters in making an informed decision.   This is a tight election race so it is important voters are clear on where candidates stand on the big issues impacting on their electorates,” said Mr Teppett.

“Whilst Act and National (Jonathan Pitts) candidates supported the project, it was heartening to see some of the comments they made.”

Act says it would not support proceeding with the project “if the final business case fails a credible BCR test or if cheaper, more targeted options could deliver most of the benefit.” National’s Jonathan Pitts also made a commitment relating to resilience.
